Human Grade

WHAT DOES "HUMAN GRADE" MEAN?

The term “human grade” has traditionally been applied to the meat ingredients in some dog foods that are considered suitable for humans. More recently, this term has been extended to pet supplement ingredients, implying that these ingredients are safe and suitable for both humans and pets. The underlying idea is that if these ingredients are good for humans, they must also be great for our beloved pets.

IS HUMAN-GRADE FOOD BETTER FOR MY PET?

Not necessarily. While many aspects of pet physiology are similar to humans, it's important not to assume that a human-grade supplement is suitable for animals without further consideration. Unfortunately, some pet supplement companies take human formulas and label them as suitable for pets. While this may be acceptable in some cases, it may not always be the best choice for your furry companion.

PICKING THE RIGHT FOOD FOR YOUR DOG OR CAT

First and foremost, remember that there is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to pet food. Just like us, dogs and cats are individuals with unique dietary needs. As a general guideline, it's advisable to avoid foods that are high in grain or corn content and excessive fat. As shown in the chart on the right, while human-grade or human food can be suitable for pets in some instances, it may not always be the ideal choice.

IS THE RIGHT FOOD ENOUGH?

Even if you select the highest-quality food for your pet, they may still not receive all the necessary nutritional support for a long and healthy life. Some veterinarians argue that the modern pet diet is a leading cause of premature illness and death in dogs and cats.

Even the most expensive or holistic commercial pet food, when cooked or processed, may lack many of the natural enzymes found in raw diets that aid in digestion. Over time, this digestive stress can lead to issues like excessive shedding, allergies, and other symptoms related to digestive stress.

IMPROVING DIET WITH SUPPLEMENTATION

For this reason, it is often recommended that dogs and cats either follow a raw, grain-free diet or, at the very least, receive supplemental digestive enzymes and probiotics throughout their lives to support their digestive and immune systems.

Giving probiotics to a puppy or kitten during their formative stages can help prevent allergies from developing later in life by supporting their microbiome. Digestive enzymes ease the digestive burden on the body, allowing for more efficient bodily processes in dogs and cats. These supplements help bring a processed diet closer to nature, offering your pet the health benefits they deserve.

COMPARE THE GUARANTEED ANALYSIS

Does the supplement or pet food you're considering provide a guaranteed analysis? Does it offer usage guidelines based on your pet's weight? Some pet products lack this essential level of detail needed for making informed decisions about your pet's nutrition.
